Somatic Experience Coaching
Somatic Experience Coaching is a powerful form of coaching that focuses on the body's sensations, emotions, and responses to help individuals overcome chronic stress patterns. Somatic Experience, based on the work of Dr. Peter Levine, recognizes the interconnectedness of the mind and body and aims to create a sense of safety and empowerment for individuals through a unique nervous system approach.

The body is an essential aspect of the healing process in SE work. The coach supports the client in tuning into their body's sensations, which can include anything from tightness in the chest to butterflies in the stomach. These sensations are often associated with past experiences, and the coach will guide the client in processing these experiences through a series of gentle exercises.

Through SE, clients can learn to regulate their nervous system, release tension and stress patterns held in the body, and develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and self-compassion. The coach provides a safe and supportive space for the client to explore their experiences, and the client is encouraged to work at their own pace, allowing for a truly personalized experience. SE Coaching can help individuals tap into their innate resilience and connect with their bodies in a new and empowering way, leading to increased well-being and a greater sense of wholeness.

While Somatic Experience Coaching and mental health therapy share many similarities, and often overlap, the primary approach for coaching is different. Coaching is intended as a supplement to compliment, but not replace, traditional therapy. Traditional therapy focuses on thought content, behavioral patterns, and exploring emotions through language. While these are important pieces of the puzzle, they don't always address physical stress patterns that often accompany mental health disorders OR are helpful for those who don't meet the criteria of a diagnosis but are still struggling with managing stress. With SE Coaching, the focus shifts from the traditional "diagnosis lens" and onto building measurable ways to increase one's resilience and control over physical responses to stress and activation.
Overall, Somatic Experience Coaching offers a unique and holistic approach to healing that can be particularly helpful for individuals who struggle with managing chronic stress patterns, chronic pain, procrastination, avoidance, difficulty in starting or completing tasks, sleep difficulties, and many others. Keep in mind that SE Coaching may not be appropriate for everyone OR may be activating in a way that highlights other struggles. For this reason, there may be times when it is appropriate for the client to engage in mental health therapy instead of this service, times where both are useful, or times when one may choose to use this service as an add on to already existing therapy.
